Saving Switzerland? Escape in the Rhine Valley
vom
Thousands of Jews, opponents of the Nazi regime, forced laborers, and Wehrmacht deserters attempted to flee across the Rhine to Switzerland between the so-called Anschluss of Austria to the German Reich in March 1938 and the end of the Second World War in May 1945. The special exhibition at the Prestegg Museum in Altstätten, Switzerland, tells stories of these people and their families who remained behind, and shows the reactions of the local population, the Swiss authorities, and those who helped them escape in the Rhine Valley and other border regions of Switzerland. This exhibition was curated by Barbara Thimm and Christina Nanz of the Jewish Museum Hohenems (Vorarlberg, Austria). Further information can be found here.
Another exhibition about the Second World War can be viewed at the Liechtenstein National Museum in Vaduz until January 11, 2026. It illustrates how the people of Liechtenstein experienced the Second World War.
